> Requirements

Statistics and Mathematics courses: 10-17 hours of calculus and elementary coursework, and 18-24 hours of 400 level courses.

Cognate: 12 hours of approved coursework in an area of statistical application.

Requirements:

  1. Calculus through Math 242 or 245 or equivalent
  2. Math 415 or 418
  3. Math 347 or 380 (advanced calculus)
  4. Stat 400 and 410 (Statistics and Probability I and II)
  5. Stat 424 or 425 (Linear Models)
  6. Three courses must be chosen from the following lists, at least two of which must be from (a):
    • (a) other statistics: Stat 426, 427, 428, 429, 430 or Math 466, or the course in #5 which is not taken to satisfy that requirement
    • (b) preparation for post graduate study: Math 446 or 448, Math 444 or 447
  7. A working knowledge of a programming language. Fortran is highly recommended as it is used in some advanced Stat courses (satisfied for instance by CS 101, 105, or 125).
  8. Cognate: At least 12 hours in a secondary subject where statistical methods are applicable. No more than 6 of these hours may be in courses emphasizing statistical methods. Course selection must have advisor approval.

*It is strongly recommended that Stat 100 be taken during the Freshman or Sophomore year as an early introduction to statistical ideas. Highly prepared students who are able to take Stat 400 before the Junior year will not need Stat 100.


> Departmental Distinctions

Distinction will be awarded on the basis of selection of 400 level courses in Statistics and grade-point average in required courses (in 400 level Math and Statistics courses). GPAs are roughly as follows:

  • 3.25 = Distinction
  • 3.5 = High Distinction
  • 3.75 = Highest Distinction
